Product Details

A RARE 40-BORE BASE-FIRE REVERSE BREECH-LOADING RIFLE SIGNED SELWYN BRAEDLIN PATENT, serial no. 55, WITH PATENT SHOVEL,
and made to Selwyn Braedlin Patent 2628 of 1865, possibly by Mont Storm, with blued multigrooved rifled 33in. barrel, block with dove-tail for fore-sight (absent), elevating ladder rear-sight with broad slider and central platinum line, flip up faceted breech-block, the top signed 'SELWYN & BRAEDLIN PATENT No 55', the block designed to accept a reverse loaded tapering base-fire cartridge, borderline engraved colour-hardened lock signed 'LONDON 1867', the colour hardened hammer with central nose locking the breech, walnut full-stock of three band Pattern '53 style, the right side of butt retro-fitted with an experimental detachable iron shovel (Selwyn Patent 2970 of October 13, 1869) removable via a screw in the butt, brass heel-plate and trigger-guard, three iron barrel-bands and jag-ended iron clearing rod, much original finish throughout

Other Notes: Given the apparent unfired condition of this rifle, it would appear that Selwyn probably had it on hand in 1869 when he was experimenting with his detachable shovel apparatus and used it as a test piece
